Jammu: On Sunday, Union Minister Jitendra Singh announced that Jammu will lead India’s first cannabis medicinal project. The project aims to produce high-quality medicines for diseases like cancer and epilepsy for export purposes. Singh mentioned that the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Jammu, is partnering with a Canadian firm for this pioneering public-private partnership.
He emphasized the potential of utilizing the therapeutic properties of cannabis to benefit patients with neuropathic complications, cancer, and epilepsy. The minister personally visited the cannabis cultivation farm of the CSIR-IIIM in Jammu to understand the cultivation practices and research conducted on this significant plant.
Singh highlighted the project’s contribution to Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) Bharat, as it would eventually obtain all necessary approvals to manufacture high-quality drugs for various ailments, including diabetic pain.
Furthermore, he underscored the importance of raising awareness, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, about the diverse medicinal uses of substances that are commonly abused but possess potential for beneficial medical purposes, especially for patients with malignancies and other diseases.
