Karnataka Government Partners with GAIL to Set Up ₹5,000-Crore Renewable Energy Infrastructure

In a major push towards sustainable energy development, the Karnataka government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with GAIL (India) Limited to establish 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy capacity across the state. The ambitious project, estimated at ₹5,000 crore, will integrate solar (ground-mounted, rooftop, and floating), wind energy, and advanced energy storage systems.

The MoU was officially signed in the presence of K.J. George, Minister for Energy, and M.B. Patil, Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development. The collaboration marks a pivotal moment in Karnataka’s journey to strengthen its clean energy infrastructure and attract large-scale green investments.

Minister Patil emphasized the state’s proactive approach in facilitating the project through flexible land acquisition strategies. These include leasing land from farmers and allotments through the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB). He assured swift administrative clearances and the provision of necessary incentives to accelerate the project’s execution. Patil also noted GAIL’s keen interest in acquiring land within existing solar parks to align with its capital expenditure plans.

“This partnership is expected to open the doors for more renewable energy investments and underscores Karnataka’s position as a front-runner in India’s green energy revolution,” said Minister George. He cited the successful Pavagada Solar Park—currently generating 2,050 megawatts (MW) of power—as a model for future projects. He further revealed that local farmers have offered an additional 10,000 acres for solar development, signaling strong community support.
