The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education, is actively implementing Special Campaign 5.0 from 2nd to 31st October 2025, focusing on institutionalising Swachhata (cleanliness) in government offices and improving the overall environment of schools across the country.
The campaign aims to enhance efficiency, promote environmental consciousness, and ensure safe and inclusive learning spaces through a series of targeted initiatives.
Enhancing Efficiency and Record Management
As part of the campaign, DoSEL is reviewing and digitising records, weeding out obsolete files, and improving record management systems to minimise pendency and boost efficiency in official work.
Upgrading School Infrastructure
Schools across the nation are being spruced up through whitewashing, painting, and minor repairs of electrical fixtures. Functional toilets and drinking water facilities are being ensured, while beautification efforts include murals and wall art inspired by traditional art forms such as Madhubani and Warli, creating vibrant and culturally enriched learning spaces.
Promoting Environmental Responsibility
In line with Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) — a global initiative introduced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister at COP26 in Glasgow (2021) — DoSEL is prioritising the reduction of E-waste, one of Mission LiFE’s seven core themes.
On 9th October 2025, DoSEL, in collaboration with UNICEF, organised a webinar on E-Waste Awareness and Reduction, chaired by Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, DoSEL. He emphasised the need to sensitise students and teachers about responsible E-waste management to nurture environmental responsibility within the education ecosystem.
During the session, Dr. Amarpreet Duggal, Joint Secretary, DoSEL, shared practical strategies to reduce E-waste, such as preferring cloud storage over USB drives, extending the lifecycle of electronic devices, and encouraging students to take active roles in recycling initiatives.
The webinar saw enthusiastic participation from over 1.5 lakh attendees nationwide.
Nationwide E-Waste Drives
Following the webinar, E-Waste Awareness and Management Drives have been launched in Assam, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Chandigarh under the aegis of Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE, covering more than 1,000 schools as per the E-Waste Management Guidelines of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Community and Alumni Engagement
Schools have also been encouraged to engage with alumni networks, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), and School Management Committees (SMCs) through the Vidyanjali platform (https://vidyanjali.education.gov.in/) to foster Jan Bhagidari (people’s participation) and community-driven school development.
Through these sustained efforts under Special Campaign 5.0, the Ministry of Education reaffirms its commitment to fostering clean, efficient, and environmentally responsible educational institutions, nurturing a culture of accountability and sustainability across India’s schools.
