NHA, IRDAI Organise Workshops on ABDM Integration and National Health Claim Exchange Adoption

The National Health Authority (NHA) and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) have collaborated to implement the National Health Claim Exchange (NHCX), a digital platform for health claims developed by the National Health Authority.

This collaborative effort is in response to a directive from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) issued in June 2023. The circular urged all insurers and healthcare service providers to integrate with the National Health Claim Exchange (NHCX).

Unlocking Efficiency and Transparency in Health Insurance: The NHCX Integration Advantage

  1. Gateway for Seamless Information Exchange: NHCX facilitates the smooth flow of claims-related data among key stakeholders in the healthcare and health insurance ecosystem.
  2. Enhancing Interoperability: Integration with NHCX ensures seamless interoperability in health claims processing, fostering a more efficient and interconnected system.
  3. Boosting Industry Efficiency: The NHCX integration promises to elevate overall efficiency in the insurance sector, streamlining processes and reducing redundancies.
  4. Transparent Health Claims Processing: By leveraging NHCX, the insurance industry can achieve greater transparency, benefitting both policyholders and patients with clear and accessible information.
  5. Empowering Stakeholders: The collaborative effort aims to empower various stakeholders, promoting a more collaborative and integrated approach to health insurance operations.

To facilitate the integration process, a three-day workshop was conducted, primarily targeting hospital providers for onboarding onto the NHCX and urging insurance companies to achieve full integration with the platform. This workshop marked the third installment in a series of organized sessions by NHA and IRDAI. The initial two workshops, held in August and October of the current year, witnessed active participation from insurance companies and Third-Party Administrators (TPAs).

More than 150 professionals from 45 organizations, including insurance companies, TPAs, and hospitals, actively engaged in these workshops. Given the positive strides made by insurance companies during these sessions, organizations were recommended to choose their flagship retail product and designate one network hospital for piloting the implementation of NHCX.

This workshop saw participation from 10 hospitals, each assigned to an insurance company. The technical and business teams of these hospitals were guided by teams from NHA, IRDAI and NRCeS (National Resource Centre for EHR Standards) to onboard on the NHCX.

Transformative Milestones in NHCX Integration: Advancing Digital Health Transactions

  • Successful Integration Achieved: Eight insurance companies/TPAs completed full integration during the workshop, bringing the total count to 12, showcasing significant progress in NHCX adoption.
  • Early Integration Prowess: Four insurance companies (Aditya Birla Health Insurance, Star Health and Allied Insurance, Bajaj Allianz Insurance Company, HDFC Ergo Insurance) had already achieved full integration in the second workshop held in October.
  • Comprehensive Participation: Seven insurance companies and one TPA (ICICI Lombard General Insurance, The New India Assurance Company, Care Health Insurance, Go Digit General Insurance, Acko General Insurance, Tata AIG General Insurance Company, Paramount TPA, United India Insurance Company) successfully completed NHCX integration during the recent workshop.
  • Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS): NHA introduces financial incentives under DHIS from January 2023, offering rewards for efficient insurance claim processing through NHCX.
  • Financial Incentives for Hospitals: DHIS includes a provision for hospitals, providing financial incentives of Rs 500 per claim or 10% of the claim amount (whichever is lower) for every insurance claim transaction through NHCX.
  • Encouraging Digital Health Adoption: The NHA’s DHIS aims to boost the adoption of digital health transactions and the digitization of patient health records in the country.
  • Anticipated Full-Scale Launch: With active participation from insurance companies and providers, a comprehensive launch of this transformative initiative is on the horizon.
