Shri Sanjay Garg, a senior civil servant from the 1994 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (Kerala cadre), has assumed charge as the Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) — the National Standards Body of India — with effect from November 1, 2025.
Bringing with him over three decades of extensive administrative experience, Shri Garg has served in diverse leadership roles across sectors such as agriculture, food logistics, defence industry, industrial promotion, finance, and various social development domains at both the State and National levels.
Before his appointment as DG, BIS, Shri Garg served as Additional Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Secretary, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). During his tenure, he led several digital transformation initiatives, notably the scaling up of the Kisan Sarathi portal, which connects farmers directly with agricultural scientists — a major step toward farmer-centric knowledge dissemination.
His administrative portfolio also includes management of World Bank projects, promotion and deregulation of the defence industry sector, and initiatives for industrial growth, including the leather industry’s promotion.
As Director General of BIS, Shri Garg will oversee India’s standardization, certification, and quality assurance framework, while also serving as the President of India’s National Committee in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) — a key role in shaping India’s global standards engagement.
His appointment is expected to strengthen BIS’s role in promoting quality, safety, and innovation, aligning with India’s broader goals of “Viksit Bharat” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.
