Singapore and India have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to strengthen cooperation in maritime digitalisation and decarbonisation. The agreement was signed by Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), and R. Lakshmanan, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MOPSW) of India. The signing was witnessed by Dr. Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment and Ministry of Transport, Singapore, and Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways of India.
Under the LOI, both nations will collaborate on projects aimed at advancing maritime digitalisation and decarbonisation. The partnership will focus on identifying key stakeholders who can contribute to these efforts, with the goal of formalising the collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a Singapore-India Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC).
India, recognized as a global leader in information technology, has the potential to become a major producer and exporter of green marine fuels. Singapore, a prominent transshipment and bunkering hub, boasts a dynamic research and innovation ecosystem supporting sustainable maritime initiatives.
Once established, the Singapore-India GDSC will facilitate greater cooperation between the two nations, accelerating the adoption of zero or near-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission technologies and promoting digital solutions for the maritime sector. This initiative aligns with global efforts to achieve cleaner and more efficient shipping operations, contributing to sustainability and environmental protection in the maritime industry.
