Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, inaugurated the GST Bhawan, the new official complex of the CGST Udaipur Commissionerate under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The event, held in Udaipur, was attended by prominent figures including MPs Manna Lal Rawat and Chunnilal Garasiya, CBIC Chairman Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, and other senior CBIC officials.
In her keynote address, Finance Minister Sitharaman highlighted the economic significance of the Udaipur Commissionerate, noting its operation in a hub where key commodities such as zinc, lead, silver, cement, fertilizer, and tyres are produced. She commended the timely completion of the GST Bhawan project, despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and praised its adherence to quality standards, providing modern facilities for taxpayers and ample workspace for staff.
Sitharaman emphasized the government’s commitment since 2019 to enhancing infrastructure for GST Zones and Commissionerates. She urged for regular interactions between trade and tax officers to foster positive dialogue and encourage swift resolution of GST-related grievances. The Finance Minister also recommended sector-wise outreach programs to identify areas requiring further reform and advocated for a soft implementation of GST laws, with stringent measures as a last resort.
During the ceremony, the Union Finance Minister also launched ICETAB 2.0, a handheld device designed to streamline customs operations by enabling real-time uploading of examination reports and quicker clearance of cargoes.
Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Chairman of CBIC, in his welcome address, highlighted the GST Bhawan’s modern, energy-efficient design, compliant with the Government of India’s green building norms. He also noted the complex’s strategic location, offering easy access to major districts within the Udaipur Commissionerate, and its proximity to Udaipur Railway Station and Bus Stand.
