Indian Railways and CII Renew MoU to Accelerate Green Initiatives and Reduce Carbon Footprint

Indian Railways, a major player in the transportation sector, has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the third consecutive term. The agreement, aimed at reducing energy and water consumption and lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, was officially signed on January 4, 2024, in the presence of key officials.

Indian Railways, acknowledging its role as a major stakeholder in environmental conservation, has set an ambitious “Net Zero Carbon Emission” target by 2030. The railway network encompasses numerous stations, production units, workshops, and establishments, prompting various green initiatives to minimize carbon footprints and contribute to environmental protection.

The collaboration between CII and Indian Railways, which began in July 2016, has witnessed successive renewals of the MoU, with the latest signed in 2024 for a three-year term. Significant progress has been made in achieving energy efficiency, environmental performance improvement, and sustainability across various facets of Indian Railways under the previous agreements.

Some notable achievements under the previous MoUs include:

  1. Energy Efficiency: Savings of 210 lakh kWh, monetary savings of Rs. 16 crores, and a significant reduction of around 18,000 tons of CO2 emissions in manufacturing facilities and railway workshops.
  2. GreenCo Rating: Implementation in 75 railway units (workshops & manufacturing facilities), substantially improving their environmental performance.
  3. Green Railway Stations: Approximately 40 stations achieving green certification, saving 22 million kWh of energy and 3 billion liters of water annually.
  4. Green Buildings, Hospitals, Schools, and Colonies: Over 40 facilities, including administrative buildings, hospitals, schools, and colonies, facilitated to achieve green certification.
  5. Capacity Building and Skill Development: Introduction of more than 20 new technology suppliers, exposure of around 150 IR officials to six best energy-efficient private sector plants in India, and training of approximately 900 IR officials on different aspects of energy efficiency.

Shailendra Singh, Principal Executive Director/ME (EnHM & Project), Railway Board, and Seema Arora, Deputy Director General, CII, formalized the MoU, witnessed by Smt. Jaya Varma Sinha, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Railway Board, Board Members, and other senior officers.

Jaya Varma Sinha expressed optimism about the renewed collaboration, emphasizing that green practices are fundamental to the planning, design, development, and operations of Indian Railways. She highlighted the commitment to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions.

Seema Arora, Deputy Director General of CII, commended Indian Railways for its efforts in implementing green measures. She underscored the importance of the partnership in driving sustainable development and contributing to a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future. The renewed MoU will focus on implementing cutting-edge solutions, bringing new technologies, achieving ISO 50001 certification, developing a Net-Zero Energy Railway station framework, and creating an information dashboard to showcase advancements in green initiatives.

The collaboration between Indian Railways and CII stands as a testament to their joint commitment to building a more environmentally responsible railway network for future generations.
