In a momentous stride towards bolstering India’s healthcare infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated five All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to the nation. The inaugurated AIIMS are located in Rajkot (Gujarat), Bathinda (Punjab), Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh), Kalyani (West Bengal), and Mangalagiri (Andhra Pradesh). This dedication was part of a larger initiative where the Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for over 200 healthcare projects across 23 states and union territories, amounting to more than Rs. 11,700 crores.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi expressed that the unveiling of these AIIMS provides a glimpse into the evolving healthcare infrastructure of “Viksit Bharat.” He emphasized the significant progress made, noting that from having only one AIIMS in New Delhi serving the nation for an extended period, India now boasts multiple AIIMS functioning across various capacities nationwide.
Each of the newly dedicated AIIMS holds immense significance in the healthcare landscape of their respective regions:
- AIIMS Rajkot: Built at a cost of Rs. 1195 crores, this 750-bed hospital complex also includes a 50-seat medical college and covers an area of 201 acres.
- AIIMS Bathinda: Costing Rs. 925 crores, this 750-bed medical institute spans 177 acres, equipped with 10 Specialty departments, 11 Super-Specialty departments, and 6 Operation Theatres.
- AIIMS Raebareli: With a total project cost of Rs. 823 crores, this 610-bed hospital complex features 30 Emergency & Trauma beds, ICU & Super Specialty beds, and a Medical College with 100 seats.
- AIIMS Kalyani: A 960-bed hospital built on 179.82 acres of land at a cost of Rs. 1754 crores, it includes a Medical College with 125 seats, a Nursing College with 60 seats, and an AYUSH block with 30 beds.
- AIIMS Mangalagiri: A 960-bed hospital complex constructed at a cost of 1618.23 crores, spread over 183.11 acres, with a medical college offering 125 seats.
In addition to the AIIMS, the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony included various healthcare projects under the National Health Mission (NHM) and Prime Minister-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM). These projects aim to enhance healthcare accessibility and quality across the country.
The dedication of these AIIMS and healthcare projects represents a significant stride towards accessible and advanced healthcare facilities for citizens across India, showcasing the government’s commitment to improving public health infrastructure.
