NTPC Limited is set to launch the latest edition of its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM). This initiative, aligned with the Government of India’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign, aims to tackle gender inequality head-on by empowering young girls and fostering their potential.
Commencing in April 2024, the new edition of GEM will bring nearly 3,000 meritorious children from underprivileged backgrounds into its fold at 42 identified locations across the power sector PSU. This addition pushes the total number of beneficiaries under the Mission to over 10,000.
Originally piloted in 2018 with just three locations and 392 participants, GEM has evolved into a nationwide movement, weathering the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Over the years, the program has seen significant growth, benefitting a total of 7,424 girls to date. The numbers have been steadily rising, with 2,707 girls participating in the workshop across 40 locations of NTPC in 2023, covering 16 states of India.
The mission of GEM is clear: to empower girls through various interventions and to identify and nurture their leadership qualities. The workshop, spanning a month during summer holidays, focuses on crucial aspects such as health, hygiene, safety, fitness, sports, and yoga.
GEM has earned widespread acclaim for its holistic approach to skill development, confidence-building, and mentorship. By providing essential tools and unwavering support, NTPC aims to pave the way for a brighter future for upcoming generations. The initiative seeks to empower girls to become catalysts of change, not only for themselves but also for their families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
