The Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Justice (Retd.) Sanjaya Kumar Mishra as the President of the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) in New Delhi. The oath of integrity and secrecy was administered to Justice Mishra, marking the operationalization of the crucial body tasked with resolving disputes related to the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The establishment of the GSTAT, as mandated by the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, underscores the government’s commitment to expeditiously address GST-related appeals. Comprising a Principal Bench in New Delhi and 31 State Benches across the country, the Tribunal is poised to alleviate the burden on higher courts by offering swift and fair adjudication of GST disputes.
Justice (Retd.) Sanjaya Kumar Mishra, the inaugural President of GSTAT, brings to the role a wealth of experience, having served as the former Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. His selection by a Search-cum-Selection Committee chaired by the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India reflects his eminence and credibility in the legal fraternity.
