State Government to Provide Free Higher Education Covering 642 courses

In a landmark decision aimed at empowering young women and promoting gender equality in education, the state government will cover the full cost of higher education for 20 lakh girls. This initiative, set to begin in the 2024-25 academic year, will offer free education across 642 courses, including engineering, medical, and pharmacy programs.

Comprehensive Coverage Across Multiple Disciplines

The state government will allocate Rs 1800 crore annually to fund this ambitious program, which seeks to eliminate financial barriers for girls pursuing higher education. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the educational opportunities for young women, thereby enabling them to advance in their careers and contribute more effectively to society.

Bridging Economic Gaps and Empowering Women

Despite significant progress in various sectors, many girls still face challenges in continuing their education due to economic hardships. This initiative aims to address these issues by providing comprehensive financial support, ensuring that girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds can pursue their academic goals without financial stress.

Government’s Commitment to Education and Gender Equality

The decision, which was finalized in a recent cabinet meeting, underscores the government’s commitment to increasing the percentage of girls in higher education. It also aims to counteract social practices such as early marriage, which often arise due to the inability to afford higher education.

Implementation and Future Prospects

Currently, the government covers half of the fees for these courses. With the new policy, the state will bear the entire cost, making higher education completely free for eligible girls. This significant financial commitment from the state is expected to have far-reaching impacts on the educational landscape, promoting higher enrollment rates among girls and fostering a more inclusive and equitable academic environment.

The decision will be formally implemented after the Lok Sabha code of conduct concludes, marking a major step forward in the state’s efforts to support and uplift young women through education.
