In a recent transition within the Indian Armed Forces, General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, has taken over as the 30th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) from General Manoj Pande, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC. General Pande superannuated on 30 June 2024, concluding over four decades of dedicated service to the nation.
General Dwivedi, an alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa (MP), and a seasoned military leader with 40 years of service, was commissioned into the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles in 1984. He has a distinguished career characterized by a balanced command and staff exposure across Northern, Eastern, and Western theatres, operating in various challenging environments.
Assuming leadership at a time of dynamic global geo-strategic shifts, General Dwivedi’s priorities include enhancing operational preparedness to counter security threats, particularly those posed by technological advancements and modern warfare’s evolving nature. His focus will be on developing a robust response strategy to non-traditional security challenges, thereby strengthening national defense.
Known for his effective planning and execution in unforeseen scenarios, General Dwivedi has held critical appointments and has been instrumental in addressing grey zone conflicts in national security. His expertise in modern and emerging technologies is expected to drive the integration of cutting-edge innovations into military systems, aligning with the Indian Army’s modernization and capability development goals through the Atmanirbharta initiative.
General Dwivedi’s leadership will emphasize the Chetwode Motto, fostering a culture of trust, empowering junior officers, and ensuring the well-being of soldiers, veterans, and Veer Naris. His tenure as COAS is anticipated to steer the Indian Army towards enhanced operational effectiveness and a fortified national defense infrastructure.
