CBSE Plans Comprehensive AI Policy to Prepare Students for Future Jobs

In a bid to equip students with essential skills for future employment and foster innovation, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is laying the groundwork for a comprehensive policy on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This initiative, discussed during the CBSE’s department of Skill Education meeting held in November last year, aims to integrate AI education into the curriculum.

As per officials familiar with the development, the plan includes the formation of a committee comprising representatives from esteemed higher education institutions such as IITs, NITs, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and stakeholders from leading global AI industries. Additionally, AI-powered startups will have a voice in the committee’s discussions.

The rapid evolution of AI has brought about transformative changes across various sectors, including healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and transportation. Recognizing this, CBSE emphasizes the necessity for students to possess a strong foundation in AI skills to prepare them for the future job market.

‘The committee will be tasked with developing strategies to enhance students’ AI skills and prepare them for 21st-century careers,’ stated a senior official from CBSE. This includes plans to leverage AI and digital creativity tools to improve learning outcomes and promote social inclusion by providing education opportunities for students with disabilities.

Moreover, the proposed policy will extend professional development opportunities to teachers and educators, aiming to establish robust industry-academic partnerships. The committee’s mandate will involve setting both short-term and long-term goals, with targeted milestones at the end of the first, third, and fifth years.

Officials anticipate the committee’s formation soon, with work expected to commence on the proposal promptly. It is projected that recommendations stemming from these discussions will be submitted by the end of April 2024. This forward-looking initiative underscores CBSE’s commitment to preparing students for the evolving demands of the modern workforce through innovative educational strategies.
