Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the proposal for the expansion of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) by adding a staggering three lakh cadet vacancies. This expansion is in response to the growing demand for NCC participation from educational institutions across the country.
Since its modest beginnings with just 20,000 cadets in 1948, the NCC is now set to become the world’s largest uniformed youth organization, with a sanctioned strength of 20 lakh cadets. This expansion aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, where NCC is offered as an elective subject, reflecting the aspirations of youth to take on crucial roles as future leaders of the nation.
The ambitious expansion plan includes a proportional distribution of vacancies across all States & Union Territories, aiming to reduce the waiting list of institutions eager to join the NCC. As part of this initiative, four new Group Headquarters will be established, and two new NCC units will be added to further bolster the organization’s reach.
A noteworthy aspect of the expansion strategy involves the proposal to employ ex-servicemen as NCC instructors, tapping into their skills and extensive experience. This move not only ensures quality training for NCC cadets but also creates employment opportunities for veterans, highlighting a noble effort to support those who have served the nation.
