In a move to enhance consumer trust and streamline communication, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced a new numbering series, 160xxxxxxx, designated exclusively for service and transactional voice calls. This initiative aims to address the growing challenge of differentiating legitimate service calls from spam and fraudulent communications.
Background and Need for the New Series
Previously, the 140xxxxxxx numbering series was allocated to telemarketers for promotional, service, and transactional calls. However, due to the extensive use of this series for promotional purposes, consumers have become wary and often ignore these calls. Consequently, many important service and transactional calls are missed, prompting genuine entities to resort to regular 10-digit numbers. This overlap has created an opportunity for fraudsters to exploit the situation by deceiving consumers using similar 10-digit numbers.
To rectify this and restore consumer confidence, the DoT has allocated the new 160xxxxxxx series exclusively for service and transactional calls. This clear differentiation will allow consumers to easily identify and respond to legitimate calls from genuine entities.
Implementation and Verification
Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) are responsible for ensuring thorough verification of entities before assigning them a number from the 160 series. These entities must commit to using these numbers solely for service and transactional calls, adhering to the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR), 2018.
For instance, service and transactional calls originating from financial entities like the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) will begin with 1601. This structured approach will significantly reduce the risk of fraudulent calls.
Benefits to Consumers
Consumers can now have greater confidence in the legitimacy of calls from the 160xxxxxxx series, knowing these are verified and legitimate service or transactional communications. This differentiation will help reduce the likelihood of falling victim to scams and ensure critical communications are not missed.
Additionally, consumers are encouraged to activate the Do Not Disturb (DND) feature provided by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to block unwanted promotional calls, thereby enhancing their protection against spam.
Reporting Fraudulent Communications
For any suspected fraudulent communications, citizens are advised to report them via the Chakshu facility available on the Sanchar Saathi platform at www.sancharsaathi.gov.in. This platform serves as a resource for consumers to report and track potential scams, further ensuring their safety and security.
The introduction of the 160xxxxxxx numbering series by the DoT is a proactive step towards improving the telecommunication experience for consumers in India. By clearly distinguishing service and transactional calls from promotional and fraudulent ones, this initiative aims to restore consumer confidence and enhance the effectiveness of legitimate communications. As this new system is implemented, consumers can expect a more secure and efficient communication landscape.
