Jitendra Singh, the atomic energy minister has said on Wednesday that the government has accorded ‘in-principle’ approval for five new sites for setting up nuclear power plants in the future, and also efforts are being made to buy uranium as nuclear fuel from Russia and pressurized heavy water reactors from three countries.
In a written reply in Lok Sabha, Singh said the government has accorded administrative approval and financial sanction for the construction of 10 indigenous 700MW PHWRs to establish in fleet mode. Further, he shared information on the progressive completion of the projects under construction and accorded sanction, the nuclear capacity will be reaching 22,480MW by 2031.
For the producing fuel for all indigenous PHWRs, the capacity of fuel fabrication is increased in the facilities available at Hyderabad-based NFC – Nuclear Fuel Complex and upcoming facilities at the NGC in Kota to fulfill the requirement of existing PHWRs and upcoming reactors.
