Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the three major schemes worth Rs 8,000 Cr for Disaster Management, on Tuesday. The three major schemes will cover the modernization of fire brigade services in all the states, flood mitigation in seven major cities, and prevention of landslides in 17 states.
While addressing a meeting, the Home Minister appealed to ensure that there is zero loss of life due to any disaster anywhere in the country. He chaired the meeting with the ministers of Disaster Management of States and Union Territories at the Vigyan Bhavan.
‘A total of Rs 5,000 crore project to expand and modernize fire services in states, Rs 2,500 crore project for the seven most populous metros – Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Pune – to reduce the risk of urban flooding, and Rs 825 crore National Landslide Risk Mitigation Scheme in 17 states and union territories for landslide mitigation,’ said the Home Minister.
Focusing on the evolving disaster risks, he said, ‘the Central and the States Government together have achieved a lot in this area, which can’t be denied. But we cannot stay content as the disasters have changed their form, frequency, and pace as well. And we really need to tighten our seat belts and work on more extensive planning.’
‘The States, where nuclear power stations are being set up, have been given a strict protocol to be followed in the case of any emergency situation,’ he added.
