The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has announced its ambitious goal of incubating at least 100 startups across various sectors in the year 2024. Renowned for being a top deep-tech startup ecosystem in India, the IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC) serves as the institute’s central hub for nurturing and supporting innovation and entrepreneurship projects.
Director of IIT Madras, V Kamakoti, expressed pride in the achievements of the institute during 2023. Notable milestones included the establishment of the IITM Zanzibar Campus, marking the first-ever overseas IIT campus. The institute also launched a Department of Medical Sciences and Technology and is set to unveil a new school focusing on interdisciplinary sciences, reflecting the current trend in education.
‘We are moving towards interdisciplinary education, and our goal is to close this financial year with the maximum number of projects,’ Kamakoti stated. He emphasized the institute’s commitment to launching 100 startups in 2024, recognizing the significance of innovative technologies emerging from IIT Madras-incubated startups.
Among the startups garnering attention are Hyperloop, ePlane, Agnikul Cosmos, and Mindgrove Technologies. These ventures, nurtured within IIT Madras, are poised to deliver products of great national importance. The institute aims to contribute to the startup ecosystem by fostering groundbreaking technologies and facilitating their growth into impactful businesses.
In 2023, IIT Madras made history by becoming the first IIT to establish a campus overseas. The IITM Zanzibar Campus offers BS and MTech programs in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, with plans to introduce additional academic programs in the near future. The first batch at IITM Zanzibar reflects diversity, with students from Zanzibar, mainland Tanzania, Nepal, and India, including 40% women.
Director Kamakoti revealed exciting initiatives and socially relevant projects planned for 2024. The institute aims to close the financial year with an impressive 366 patents, highlighting its commitment to continuous innovation. Kamakoti emphasized, ‘It is a matter of great pride at IIT Madras that we do a lot more innovation.’
