To align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Higher and Technical Education Department of Maharashtra has introduced a comprehensive Internship Policy for all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the state. As per the new policy, internships are made compulsory for both Under-Graduate (UG) and Post-Graduate (PG) students, necessitating the establishment of dedicated Internship Cells in all colleges and universities.
The draft policy, released by the department, outlines the structure of the Internship Cell, defines various types of internships, and specifies the responsibilities of the cell. It also includes proforma for the evaluation of students, encompassing attendance, performance review, feedback, and other data management aspects.
Key highlights of the Internship Policy include:
- Mandatory Internship Cells: All HEIs in Maharashtra are now required to have a dedicated Internship Cell.
- Governing Council: The Internship Cell at each HEI will be led by the Internship Governing Council, comprising the Vice Chancellor or Dean or Principal. It will also include a Nodal Officer and Assistant Coordinators.
- Faculty and Student Coordinators: Department-level Faculty Coordinators and Student Coordinators will be appointed to efficiently manage outreach to students.
- Internship Opportunities: The policy recognizes various internship opportunities, including regular industrial or government company internships, work with NGOs or MSMEs, entrepreneurship or innovation experiences, participation in research projects, community engagement, and rural internships.
- Credit System: During internship registration, students will indicate their preference for academic or industrial internships. One credit is equivalent to a minimum of 30 hours of work, and students are expected to spend 30 hours per week on internship and related activities.
- Flexible Timing: Students will have opportunities for internships during summers, winters, as well as semester-integrated internships to fulfill the required credits.
The department has released the draft policy and is actively seeking suggestions from HEIs to ensure comprehensive and inclusive guidelines for effective implementation. This initiative is expected to provide students with diverse exposure and hands-on experience, enhancing their skills and employability in alignment with the evolving demands of the industry.
