Rajkot: The new International Airport in Rajkot was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a significant step in strengthening the country’s aviation infrastructure and improving regional connectivity. The event was attended by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendra Rajnikant Patel, the Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, and other esteemed guests. This development marks a milestone in enhancing travel opportunities and facilitating economic growth in the region.
The airport boasts a new Terminal building that spans an impressive 23,000 square meters, catering to the needs of up to 2800 passengers during peak hours. This state-of-the-art facility features 20 check-in counters and 5 conveyor belts, providing the utmost convenience to travelers. The runway stretches out to 3040 meters in length and measures 45 meters in width. Additionally, the airport’s apron, measuring 334 meters by 152 meters, is capable of accommodating a fleet of Ten (10) Code-C type and Four (4) Code-B type aircraft simultaneously. For efficient operations, the airport offers two Link Taxi tracks, each spanning 428 meters by 23 meters. Furthermore, the airport management has thoughtfully developed a spacious parking area capable of accommodating 300 cars and 75 two-wheelers.
The Terminal Building of Hirasar Airport is equipped with a variety of sustainable features such as a Double Insulated Roofing System, energy-saving Canopies, LED Lighting, Low Heat Gain Double Glazing Unit, Landscaping with fountains, HVAC, Water treatment plant, Sewage treatment plant, and the use of recycled water for landscaping. Additionally, the airport is designed with the goal of meeting GRIHA –IV ratings, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability.
The Hirasar Greenfield Airport has been meticulously planned and developed to meet the growing demands of the aviation industry. With ample space for commercial activities, the airport caters to the needs of discerning travelers. Moreover, the airport design adheres to the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan norms, ensuring accessibility for all passengers. This is achieved through the incorporation of tactile paths, which enhance the experience of differently abled individuals.
Tweeting, PM Modi wrote that this modern infrastructure will significantly boost connectivity, fostering growth and development not only in Rajkot but also for the entire Saurashtra region.
In his speech, Shri Jyotiraditya M Scindia further emphasized the significant growth in flight movements, stating that the number has more than doubled from 56 flights per week in 2014 to 130 flights per week currently. Rajkot currently has air connectivity with Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Goa, and Bengaluru, and in the upcoming weeks, connections with Udaipur and Indore will also be established. It’s worth noting that Gujarat’s connectivity has tremendously improved, with 50 cities now being connected compared to just 19 in 2014. The development of the new terminal building and airside infrastructure covers an extensive land area of 2534 acres and has been accomplished at a cost of Rs.1405 Cr. This comprehensive project includes the construction of the runway, apron, parallel taxi track, and other essential components.
