The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has recommended Deepak Gupta as the next Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of GAIL (India) Limited, one of India’s leading Maharatna public sector enterprises.
The recommendation comes more than 4 months ahead of the incumbent CMD Sandeep Gupta’s retirement, ensuring a well-planned and seamless leadership transition at the country’s largest natural gas transmission and marketing company.
Deepak Gupta, who currently serves as Director (Projects) at GAIL, has been instrumental in driving key infrastructure projects and expansion strategies aligned with India’s clean energy transition goals.
Subject to obtaining necessary clearances and final approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), Gupta will formally assume charge as CMD on March 1, 2026, succeeding Sandeep Gupta. His tenure will continue until his superannuation on February 28, 2029.
The early nomination underscores the government’s focus on ensuring continuity in leadership at strategic energy PSUs, particularly as GAIL plays a crucial role in advancing India’s gas-based economy and energy diversification roadmap.
