PM Modi and Pedro Sanchez Jointly Inaugurate TATA Aircraft Complex for Manufacturing C-295 Aircraft in Vadodara, Gujarat

To boost to India’s defense manufacturing capabilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, jointly inaugurated the state-of-the-art TATA Aircraft Complex for manufacturing C-295 military transport aircraft at the Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) campus in Vadodara, Gujarat today. This marks a milestone in the growing defense partnership between India and Spain.

Addressing the event, Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the inauguration symbolizes the strengthening of ties between India and Spain, emphasizing that the partnership is being taken in a new direction. ‘The manufacturing of C-295 aircraft will not only enhance defense cooperation but also contribute to our ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ mission,’ he stated. Prime Minister Sanchez’s visit to India further underlines the importance of this collaboration.

C-295 Aircraft Program Overview

The C-295 aircraft program aims to deliver a total of 56 aircraft to the Indian Air Force, with 16 being supplied by Airbus from Spain, and the remaining 40 to be manufactured in India by Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. This newly inaugurated facility becomes India’s first private sector Final Assembly Line (FAL) for military aircraft. It will handle every aspect of aircraft production—from manufacturing and assembly to testing, qualification, delivery, and lifecycle maintenance.

In addition to Tata Advanced Systems, leading public defense enterprises like Bharat Electronics Ltd. and Bharat Dynamics Ltd., along with private sector Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), will be key contributors to this program.

Fast-Track Execution and India’s Growing Capabilities

Reflecting on the rapid execution of the project, Prime Minister Modi remarked, ‘This C-295 factory represents the new work culture of a dynamic India. From laying the foundation stone in October 2022 to production-ready status today, the pace of this project showcases India’s ability to eliminate delays and execute with speed.’

Modi also drew parallels with his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat, recalling the swift establishment of the Bombardier train coach manufacturing facility in Vadodara, which now exports metro coaches globally. He expressed optimism that the C-295 aircraft manufactured in the new facility would soon be exported as well.

The C-295 aircraft, known for its tactical airlift capabilities, will be a game changer for India’s defense forces and aligns with the country’s goals of self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

The collaboration between India and Spain in this ambitious project not only reflects strong bilateral relations but also reinforces India’s growing role in the global defense manufacturing ecosystem.
