The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has unveiled a major innovation initiative — Scheme for Innovation and Technology Association with Aadhaar (SITAA) — to strengthen the country’s digital identity ecosystem and counter emerging security threats such as deepfakes, spoofing, and presentation attacks.
Applications for the programme are open until November 15.
SITAA aims to foster collaboration between startups, academic institutions, and industry leaders to co-develop secure, scalable, and globally benchmarked solutions for Aadhaar authentication. The initiative focuses on advancing biometric technologies, artificial intelligence, authentication frameworks, and data privacy.
To support the programme, MeitY Startup Hub (MSH) and NASSCOM have signed MoUs with UIDAI as strategic partners. MSH will provide technical mentoring, incubation, and accelerator support, while NASSCOM will help drive industry linkages and global outreach.
UIDAI officials said, “The SITAA programme is a significant step towards strengthening India’s digital public infrastructure and ensuring a secure, inclusive identity ecosystem. It supports the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by promoting indigenous innovation.”
Three Core Innovation Challenges
In its pilot phase, SITAA will introduce three key innovation challenges focusing on critical areas of Aadhaar authentication security:
-
Face Liveness Detection:
Development of SDKs for passive and active face liveness detection to prevent spoofing through photos, videos, masks, morphs, and deepfakes. -
Presentation Attack Detection (PAD):
AI/ML-driven solutions to detect print, replay, mask, morph, and deepfake attacks while ensuring privacy compliance and real-time detection. -
Contactless Fingerprint Authentication:
SDKs enabling fingerprint authentication using standard smartphone cameras or low-cost imaging devices, with built-in spoof detection and Aadhaar compatibility.
Driving a Secure Digital Future
The SITAA initiative is envisioned as a catalyst for innovation in India’s digital identity and authentication space. By connecting government, startups, and academia, UIDAI seeks to develop a future-ready, trusted identity infrastructure capable of withstanding evolving security threats.
Aligned with India’s broader digital public infrastructure goals, SITAA aims to reduce dependence on foreign technologies, boost indigenous research, and strengthen citizen trust in Aadhaar-enabled services.
