Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, flagged off a fleet of green hydrogen-powered buses developed by NTPC at Leh, marking a significant step in India’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Power, Leh Administration, and NTPC.
Post the flag-off, Shri Manohar Lal undertook a 12-km journey in one of the hydrogen buses from the green hydrogen filling station to the Leh Airport, experiencing the innovative technology firsthand. He lauded NTPC for its pioneering efforts in enhancing energy security and contributing to the country’s decarbonisation goals through advanced hydrogen technologies. These include applications in mobility, blending with PNG, green methanol production, and renewable energy initiatives.
The Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, the world’s highest-altitude project at 3,650 meters above sea level, is a groundbreaking development. The project comprises a 1.7 MW in-situ solar plant, a hydrogen filling station with an 80 kg/day capacity, and five hydrogen intra-city buses capable of covering 300 km per filling of 25 kg hydrogen. The system is designed to function in low-density air, sub-zero temperatures, and supports hydrogen filling at 350 bar pressure.
This initiative is expected to mitigate approximately 350 MT of carbon emissions annually and contribute 230 MT of pure oxygen to the atmosphere, equivalent to planting around 13,000 trees.
NTPC is expanding its green hydrogen initiatives across India, including the establishment of a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh. These projects are integral to NTPC’s broader strategy to scale up renewable energy capacity and drive the adoption of green hydrogen technologies nationwide.
