In a step aimed at strengthening India’s capability in emerging technologies, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Dr Jitendra Singh, inaugurated a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Artificial Intelligence, Skill Development & Innovation at Graphic Era University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
The new centre, which is being called India’s first Generative AI-Ready campus, is supported by Amazon Web Services (AWS). The facility spans around 1.5 lakh square feet and has been developed at a cost exceeding ₹10 crore. It includes high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, notably the NVIDIA DGX B200 cluster, and specialized labs like Apple-Infosys iOS development hubs.
The focus of this CoE will be multi-sectoral: healthcare, agriculture, environment, smart cities, and advanced industries. The idea is not just to conduct research, but to build local talent, innovation, and products/services around generative AI, data science, and related emerging areas. The inclusion of industry partners like AWS and Apple/Infosys administrators is intended to help bridge the gap between theoretical research and real-world applications.
In addition to technological infrastructure, the CoE will emphasize skill development—training students and researchers in AI tools, best practices in data ethics, model building, safety, and innovation management. This responds to a growing need for both technical capacity (for AI/ML, HPC etc.) and soft governance aspects (ethics, regulatory compliance) as India ramps up its ambitions in AI.
Situating this in Uttarakhand adds importance: decentralizing technological infrastructure so that it is not just concentrated in major metro‐cities. This move aligns with broader national goals to democratize access to AI education, strengthen regional innovation ecosystems, and reduce regional imbalance.
