Industrialist and Tata Sons Emeritus Chairman Ratan Tata has unveiled plans to manufacture semiconductors in Assam, a move expected to propel the state onto the global map of advanced technology. The foundation stone for this groundbreaking initiative was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week, marking a pivotal moment for Assam’s industrial landscape.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude towards Ratan Tata and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran for their visionary investment in the state. Taking to Twitter, Ratan Tata highlighted the transformative impact of these investments, emphasizing the state’s evolution not only in semiconductor manufacturing but also in complex cancer care treatments. He thanked Chief Minister Sarma for his unwavering support, citing the partnership between the state government and the Tata group as instrumental in this endeavour.
Chief Minister Sarma reciprocated the sentiment, expressing appreciation to Ratan Tata for his insights and confidence in Assam’s potential. He announced plans for a skill development center to be established within the semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, illustrating the commitment to enhance local capabilities and generate employment opportunities.
The upcoming Tata semiconductor facility, with an estimated investment of ₹27,000 crore, is poised to position Assam prominently in the global semiconductor industry. This move aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for boosting India’s semiconductor capabilities, as demonstrated by the recent virtual laying of the foundation stone for Tata Electronics Private Limited’s Rs 27,000-crore ‘Semiconductor Assembly & Test Facility’ in Jagiroad, Morigaon district.
Additionally, Tata Electronics Private Limited recently initiated the construction of a ₹91,000 crore semiconductor fabrication facility in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC). This collaboration aims to establish India’s first AI-enabled semiconductor fab, with a manufacturing capacity of up to 50,000 wafers per month. The facility is slated to produce chips for various applications, including power management IC, display drivers, microcontrollers (MCU), and high-performance computing logic. The first chip from this facility is expected to be rolled out before the conclusion of 2026.
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran emphasized the significance of India’s journey towards becoming a semiconductor powerhouse. He praised the establishment of Assam’s first semiconductor FAB and assembly unit, foreseeing a future of prosperity and job creation in the region. This strategic investment is poised to revolutionize Assam’s economic landscape, providing a platform for technological advancement and global competitiveness.
As Assam gears up to make its mark in the semiconductor industry, the collaboration between the state government and the Tata group stands as a testament to the transformative power of visionary investments in driving innovation and growth.
