CMPDI Showcases 5G Technology Revolutionizing Mining Industry at India Mobile Congress 2024

The Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDI), in collaboration with Tidal Wave Pvt. Ltd., is demonstrating the transformative impact of 5G technology on the mining sector at the India Mobile Congress 2024 (IMC 2024), held from October 15-18 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The exhibit showcases cutting-edge use cases that highlight how 5G technology is improving safety, operational efficiency, and precision in mining.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated IMC 2024, and P.M. Prasad, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Coal India Limited, was the first visitor to CMPDI’s stall. CMD, CMPDI, Manoj Kumar, along with senior officials from CMPDI, was also present to demonstrate the showcased innovations.

CMPDI is presenting 13 pioneering use cases at the event, each demonstrating the power of 5G in enhancing mining operations. These include:

  1. 5G Network Infrastructure
  2. Mission-Critical Communication (MCX)
  3. 5G-Enabled Remote Drone Operations
  4. 5G Camera with AI-Enabled Video Analytics
  5. 5G IoT Environmental Sensors
  6. 5G IoT Machinery Sensors
  7. Backward Compatibility with Legacy Devices Using CPE
  8. 5G-Enabled Automated Drilling Operations
  9. AI-Enabled Traffic Control System
  10. 5G-Enabled Slope Stability Radar System
  11. Augmented Reality (AR) with 5G-Enabled Remote Maintenance Support
  12. 5G C-V2X-Based Collision Avoidance System
  13. Digital Twin of Load Haul Dum Operations

These technologies enable real-time communication, remote monitoring, and control in mining environments, far surpassing the capabilities of traditional wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and Tetra. CMPDI’s 5G solutions provide seamless automation, reduce operational risks, and prepare the mining sector for a digital future.

In 2023, the Ministry of Coal had already demonstrated the potential of 5G in mining with successful use cases such as 5G-enabled drones, AI-powered cameras, Vehicle Tracking Systems (VTS), and Mission-Critical Voice and Video Communications at the Amlohri Open Cast Mine (OCP) of Northern Coalfields Limited. CMPDI played a key role in deploying India’s first private 5G network in coal mining at Amlohri OCP, which set the stage for future advancements.

With 5G driving digital innovation, CMPDI continues to push the boundaries of mining operations, making the industry safer, more efficient, and future-ready.
