Until October 31, 2023, the Income Tax Department achieved a record-breaking number of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) filings, which marked the deadline for filing ITRs (except ITR 7) for taxpayers without international or specified domestic transactions that necessitated audited bookkeeping.

By October 31, 2023, over 7.65 crore ITRs were filed for AY 2023-24, representing an 11.7% increase compared to the 6.85 crore ITRs filed by November 7, 2022, the previous year’s due date for such filings. Moreover, the total number of ITRs filed in FY 2023-24 for all assessment years until October 31, 2023, reached a record high of 7.85 crore, surpassing the 7.78 crore ITRs filed in FY 2022-23.

Among the 7.65 crore ITRs filed for AY 2023-24, over 7.51 crore ITRs have been verified, and out of these, 7.19 crore ITRs have been processed by October 31, 2023, representing almost 96% of the verified ITRs.

By October 31, 2023, which served as the deadline for submitting significant statutory forms such as Form 10B, 10BB, and Form 3CEB, over 1.44 crore assorted statutory forms were filed.

Efficient E-Filing Experience and Support Services:

  • Smooth handling of peak filing traffic on the e-filing portal garnered praise from taxpayers and professionals across various platforms, including Social Media.
  • Helpdesk services were extended to taxpayers via inbound and outbound calls, live chats, Webex, and co-browsing sessions.
  • Assistance was provided for query resolution on the Department’s Twitter handle through Online Response Management (ORM), with proactive outreach to taxpayers and stakeholders for immediate issue resolution.
  • Eight webinars were organized, covering topics such as auditable & time barring forms, ITR-3/5/6 filing, DSC registration, and form 10B/10BB filing, aimed at guiding taxpayers and tax professionals.
  • Educational videos were uploaded on the e-filing portal to provide additional support and guidance on relevant topics.

The IT Department extends its appreciation to all taxpayers and tax professionals for their compliance support and encourages those who are yet to file Forms and ITRs to do so. The Department emphasizes the importance of timely tax-related compliances and urges all taxpayers and tax professionals to uphold this practice.
